Comparing Theories of Leadership and Management
Theories of leadership and supervision first came about in the early 1900's. These early hypotheses were characterized by focus on individual traits and behaviors of successful commanders while later on theories examined situational circumstance and the role of enthusiasts or subordinates in the achievement of a leader. Here, I will examine and compare two theories of leadership and management -- one via an earlier point in history and the one which came about recently in an attempt to display similarities and differences involving the who and exactly how each relates to my own personal design of management.
The initial theory Let me examine and one of the earlier theories in leadership and management may be the Trait Theory. This theory is derived from the " Superb Man” theory which according to Bolden, Gosling, Marturano & Dennison (2003), suggests that leaders will be born with exceptional, innate qualities and therefore are destined to lead. The idea of the " Superb Man” theory came from taking a look at great commanders from the past and deciding that the purpose they started to be great frontrunners was because they owned something about all of them that has not been common in the average person. The trait theory expanded about this idea of a mysterious " it” factor in great leaders by identifying and listing those qualities or perhaps traits of your effective head to determine a person's likelihood of failure or success as a innovator.
The core traits identified together with the Trait Theory include the subsequent (" Trait Theory of Leadership, ” 2013): Success Drive – high levels of effort, goal, energy and initiative Leadership Motivation – desire to business lead others to reach shared desired goals Honesty and Integrity – high levels of openness, dependability and trustworthiness Self-Confidence – belief in one's home, ideas and abilities Cognitive Ability – Capable of exercising good judgment, good analytical expertise and conceptually skilled. Knowledge of Business – Knowledge of the industry and also other technical issues Emotional Maturity – very well adjusted and lacking of severe psychological disorders Others – Panache, creativity and adaptability
Because the Feature Theory targets most of the great attributes within an individual, it could be applied to everyone in all degrees of positions within an organization (" Trait Theory of Management, ” 2013). Managers can use the feature theory to assist identify parts of strengths and weakness per or potential leadership candidates. One of the major challenges with the feature theory, yet , is that it does not distinguish a level of importance of one trait poems another.
Personally, We find making use of the trait theory to help recognize areas of weakness in subordinates and personally to be the most beneficial app. While I do believe to a extent that some people are just " organic leaders”, through something innate or as something that was created in early your life, I also believe that somebody can develop these kinds of leadership attributes over time to turn into a successful leader. However , to develop those traits they must are present to a certain extent in the first place and if those traits aren't already available developing these to a level they will need to be at would be nearly impossible.
Within a previous position at one other company, component to my twelve-monthly performance assessment went into how I exemplified these kinds of and identical traits. The reasoning with this being element of my review was that particular traits been seen in by the organization as desired in all employees and the top performing employees should certainly excel in all traits because they relate to their job. The objective of the assessment was to show to me what my talents and weak point were so I could work with those all year round through the training of my personal supervisor and company management or any miscellaneous outside teaching. I found this to be incredibly helpful in to become better leader and very well rounded as often times my very own perception of my strengths and...
